No football player has become quite as much of a household name as David Beckham.

Beckham has been hailed as one of the most recognizable and talented midfielders of his football generation, renowned for his speed, kicking ability, and general ease on the football pitch.

He’s also known for his incredible charity, his business acumen, and for being a devoted family man. As a result of his combined career avenues, Beckham has accumulated an astounding series of lifetime achievements.

Here’s everything you need to know about David Beckham.

Personal Life

David Beckham was born on May 2nd, 1975, the only boy of three children.

He has been married to Spice Girls superstar Victoria Beckham since 1999, with whom he shares four children. The couple is often referred to as “Posh and Becks” in the media, as a nod to Victoria’s “Posh Spice” nickname.

Although Beckham made a name for himself as a talented sportsman, his marriage to Victoria contributed to his celebrity status off the football pitch.

Football Career History

Beckham played for many renowned football teams across the world, in four different leagues, and was considered one of the sport’s most elite players. He was perhaps best known for his free kicks and crosses, which were honored in the 2002 movie titled Bend It Like Beckham.

Manchester United

David Beckham is perhaps best known for his time as a talented football player for Manchester United, where he debuted in 1992 aged just 17.

He played a huge role for the team in the 1995-96 season, attracting national attention after scoring a goal from the halfway line (equivalent to a golfer getting a hole-in-one).

The following year, the Manchester United team successfully defended its league title. Beckham was voted Young Player of the Year.

In the 1998–99 season, United won the FA Cup, the Premier League title, and the European Cup. For his contributions to the game, Beckham was named the Most Valuable Player and best midfielder.

Real Madrid

After helping Manchester United win three more league titles in 2000, 2001, and 2003, and suffering an injury that saw him lose his place on the team, he left Manchester in 2003 to join one of the most successful football clubs in the world, the Spanish team Real Madrid.

Again, he performed well during his time at the club and contributed a lot to every game of football that he played. He remained here until 2007 when it was revealed that he had signed on with LA Galaxy.

Major League Soccer: LA Galaxy

Beckham also wanted to contribute something to the development of football in the US, to become part of tangible progression and growth. So, in the summer of 2007, he moved to the US to join LA Galaxy. His time there was based on a five-year contract.

As a Galaxy player, he also spent some time in Italy on loan to Milan in both 2009 and 2010. This was not a favorable move in the eyes of fans and was viewed largely as a tactical marketing strategy.

Regardless, he remained a key part of the Galaxy squad during his time with the team.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)

Beckham then went on to play for PSG in the French league in 2013, signing a 5-month contract to play for the club. He would also pledge to donate his entire salary to a local children’s charity.

Once his contract ended, he decided to finish his career. So, after a 20-year career, and winning 19 major trophies, Beckham retired in May 2013, at the very end of the season.

Other Career Highs

Beckham is noted for his philanthropic work. Notably, he has been a UNICEF UK ambassador since 2005 and regularly makes donations to different charities all over the world.

Beckham is also an incredible businessman. As a result of his switched-on mind and business prowess, he not only made a lot of money as a footballer but also through multiple other career choices.

Notably, he’s been an ambassador for multiple EA Sports video games throughout the years, as well as becoming a global ambassador for Maserati.

Beckham has also had cameos in multiple movies and promotional videos including Deadpool 2 in 2018.

Major Achievements

  • Beckham was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003.
  • He made 115 football appearances in total and is the first-ever English player to win league titles in four countries: Spain, England, the US, and France.
  • He is a six-time Premier League title winner, a two-time FA Cup champion, and also won the UEFA Champions League with the Red Devils in 1999.
  • He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and, in 2021, was also inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Beckham’s incredible football talent, philanthropic nature, kind demeanor, and knowledge of business make him one of the most easily recognizable athletes in the world. This remains true to this day, nearly a decade post-retirement.
