So after two release successful models, the HyperRev 2015 and 2016, the line has a new name now and the shoe looks really f**king cool. I was excited to find out if this one improved so here’s my full Nike Zoom Rev 2017 review!
I’ll talk about the shoe’s tech specs, performance, comfort, materials and decide it it’s worth the price. Let’s start the Nike Zoom Rev 2017 review!
SPEC SHEET
TYPE: MID TOP
TECH: ZOOM AIR
FIT: TRUE TO SIZE
COLORWAYS: 3+
MY RATING: 7.5/10
THE TECH
ZOOM AIR
The shoe has a Phylon midsole and a ZOOM unit in the forefoot. Definitely a basic setup but sometimes Phylon can be really good with a combination of a responsive ZOOM unit. Find out if it is here a bit later.
FIT
ALL-AROUND COMFORTABLE
So the shoe is probably the most comfortable out of all Nike’s recent budget releases. The upper is soft, absolutely no dead space, any sliding or slippage issues. Containment is nice and the shoe doesn’t feel restrictive at all.
I’d say it isn’t the lightest shoe ever, I kinda felt that while playing, I wouldn’t call it bulky, but not super light and mobile either. Something forwards could possibly enjoy.
But other than that, they fit perfectly true to size for my fairly wide foot, so the construction is pretty good for a wide footer.
PERFORMANCE
CUSHION
A very basic setup but surprisingly a good one. I’m not a heavy dude but I’m not super light and felt like this setup was pretty good for me. The ZOOM unit in the forefoot provided some basic impact protection and response. The Pylon midsole in these is actually quite good – I felt that the shoe had some minor bounce and softness just because of that Phylon.
Not a lot of court feel, if any actually, which is the opposite of any other Nike’s recent budget model (Witness, HyperLive, Clear Out…). So a heavier guard or a forward would probably enjoy these more than a low profile guard.
TRACTION
They gripped the floor well both indoors and outdoors. That classic herringbone pattern never fails and the grooves are deep and hard, so dust won’t be a huge problem. I barely needed to wipe and they dealt with most of my moves relatively well.
The rubber looks pretty hard and aggressive, so once again, another solid outdoor budget option from Nike.
SUPPORT
The shoe offers a decent amount of support for most players out there. I do a lot of fast and aggressive movements and the shoe mostly handled that well. Containment and lockdown are great, it’s just that the upper is soft and won’t really support you that much.
Support mainly comes from the proper fit, a compact internal heel counter, and the rubber outsole area that wraps around your foot a bit. No Flywire, no midfoot shank, so don’t expect these to withstand every huge blow. Still, a calmer player will enjoy these.
UPPER
TEXTILE & FUSE LAYERS
The upper is pretty soft textile material that looks like mesh but it’s not. Backed up by think Fuse layers on high wear areas for durability too.
Fairly light, breathable, comfortable. These would be the strong points of this upper. Durability and support are something that will be weaker for this type of material. Especially if you’ll play in these outdoors.
Still, definitely a great setup in my opinion. Not on a Primeknit/Flyknit level, but still good. Even if it looks cheap and basic on paper. Put them on and you’ll see how wrong you were.
FINAL VERDICT
BEST FOR HEAVIER GUARDS, FORWARDS
The Nike Zoom Rev 2017 is a pretty solid shoe. Didn’t really impress me but got the job done.
Really comfortable, good and durable traction, decent cushion, moderate support and a nice upper.
+ COMFORTABLE, FITS JUST RIGHT
+ DURABLE TRACTION FOR OUTDOORS
+ A NICE ALL-AROUND UPPER
– CUSHION IS LIMITED TO CERTAIN PLAYERS
– BASIC SUPPORT
Okay, that’s it for the review! I hope you found it useful!
