How is the EuroLeague attracting more and more NBA players recently?

The transfer of established NBA players to Europe is a sign of the evolving nature of basketball. Four-time All-Star Kemba Walker arrived with AS Monaco in 2023 while former No. 2 draft pick, Jabari Parker, made a comeback with Barcelona before leaving in 2025. Lonnie Walker IV was waived by Denver in October 2026 and was picked up by Besiktas. Is it all about the money, or does it come down to role, tactics and lifestyle? This knowledge helps when making informed NBA predictions since talent transcends leagues.

The financial equation: More competitive than you think

European elite contracts can be huge. According to Eurohoops' September 2026 estimates, Vasilije Micic's net after tax is approximately $5.6 million annually, Kendrick Nunn's is $5.3 million and Guerschon Yabusele's is $5.0 million annually. All estimates reported here are unofficial and not made by the U.S. government. The net numbers are not the same as the numbers usually posted by the NBA before tax.

It's a considerable amount under the NBA supermax money. However, for many vets, the comparison is not a superstar contract, it's a short, non-guaranteed contract or a restricted role or not being sure of making the roster. Depending on the club, a guaranteed number of years of service combined with a central role, housing, transport or family support, may be offered by a leading European club. Sometimes security can be more important than NBA prestige. Contract values are a reflection of club ambition, with contenders paying premiums for creators and rebuilding teams offering development minutes and leadership.

From the end of the bench to center stage

Opportunity is a player's value component. An NBA rotation's 10th or 11th man might sit on the bench until injury or matchup demands are met, while a European signing can be called on to start a game, to close out the game and help coach others how to play the game. It isn't a guarantee of a stardom, but it's a way of drawing players to your possession of the ball.

Parker's talent was best shown at Barcelona, where his ability to score put him in a prominent role following a rocky NBA career. Barcelona and Parker agreed to end his contract in June 2025, therefore, he is not currently a Barça player. As for a better long-term illustration, Mike James, after a few seasons in the NBA, went on to become a top-tier EuroLeague guard and won the regular season MVP of the league in 2023-24 playing with Monaco. Europe is a strategic reset, not a retreat, for ambitious veterans.

A different style: the allure of European Basketball

Tactical depth over individual isolation

The EuroLeague is known for its half-court offense, screening combination, rotations, and scouting. Coaches have a lot of power and possessions can turn on exploiting a mismatch that was setup several actions prior. There's spacing, athleticism and shot creation in the NBA as well, and it makes isolation a more obvious possibility in a lot of games. There is no one league style.

When the break is slower, for a veteran with a slow first step, reading coverages, passing out of traps and predicting rotations are just as valuable as being a pacy athlete. There is reward for decision-making in European systems, but adaptation continues to be key.

A new environment to evolve their game

Rules influence tactics. FIBA does not employ the NBA three second violation, which means that if the big defender is in the lane when they are in a legal position, then they can stay there. FIBA lane is narrower than NBA lane. These differences impact the driving room, post play and rim protection. Players are also expected to acquaint themselves to the FIBA three point line and FIBA rules of the game.

The EuroLeague seasons are shorter than the NBA's 82 games, but not necessarily any less challenging: domestic leagues, travel and playoff pressure impose demands. The 2025–26 regular season of the 20-team expanded EuroLeague consisted of 38 rounds, with play-in and playoff stages. The pressure to qualify for money adds an extra dimension in which to develop abilities.

The trailblazers: High-profile players making the leap

Walker is not a current player for Monaco, having featured in 23-24. Parker moved to Barcelona in 2023 but left in 2025. Willy Hernangómez completed a transfer from the NBA to Barcelona in 2023, but departed at the end of his contract in June 2026, to play for Unicaja Málaga. His brother Juancho has followed suit and has joined Panathinaikos in 2023, where he is now continuing his tenure under a new contract, which is expected to be signed in 2026.

The success and failures of these cases are different. Shane Larkin's extended tenure with Anadolu Efes and James's influence at Monaco are examples of how former NBA players can make a huge splash in an overseas league. Since his departure from Denver, Lonnie Walker IV's transfer to Besiktas in October 2026 is a new case in point of the route staying available.

Beyond the hardwood: Quality of life and career longevity

A close decision can be decided by the quality of life. Living in a city like Athens, Barcelona, Milan or Monaco, and a different pace of competition, could also come with a European base, which means less transcontinental travel. Players might prize family, culture or stability. The mobility of EuroLeague teams doesn't decrease, nor do the number of games played by many of them, and less NBA regular-season games doesn't necessarily translate to less wear.

Another attraction is arena culture. With rivalries and playoff nights so intense and personally felt, supporters are seen in many places in Europe creating loud, tightly packed environments. There are people who like the NBA's infrastructure, exposure and size.

The salary is not the sole reason for migration. Money is a factor, but are guaranteed opportunity, competitive objective and personal preferences. The trend will undoubtedly continue to influence global basketball as European clubs continue to invest in talent and NBA spots are hotly pursued. Those who are looking at form, lineups and motivation should never presume that a recognizable NBA name is all that it is.
