This is one of my most anticipated models of 2017. Who doesn’t want to try out a new Curry, especially when the last three were really damn good? This one looks miles different, so here’s my detailed Under Armour Curry 4 review!
I’ll talk about the shoe’s tech specs, the fit, performance, the upper and decide if it’s worth the price. Let’s start the Under Armour Curry 4 review!
WEIGHT: 314 g. / 11.06 oz
TYPE: MID TOP
TECH: PROPRIETARY FOAM, SPEED PLATE
FIT: TRUE TO SIZE
MY RATING: 9/10
What’s interesting is we don’t really know the actual cushion specs of the shoe this time and UA lists it simply as “proprietary foam”. That could basically be any cushion (Charged, MicroG, etc.) but that’s not really a big deal since how it actually plays is what matters to us players.
This is a torsional plate that sits between the forefoot and heel areas underfoot for providing stability and smooth step transitions, thus enhancing how the cushioning feels underfoot. Think of it as FlightSpeed on Air Jordan’s models.
The first few sessions with the Curry 4 were pretty weird and annoying for me but that was simply the upper breaking in. I’m a wide footer but the upper and the whole shoe’s construction is really soft and forgiving, so even a wide footer I think should go true to size.
After a couple of days, these became really freakin’ awesome to wear. There are shoes that have a super light and soft knit upper, so they emphasize mobility. There shoes that are sturdier and have hard leather uppers that focus on support and security.
This f**king one just does it both – and it’s awesome. It’s actually hard to describe, the shoe does fit really tight but doesn’t feel that way thanks to that upper and overall clever design by UA. I had zero issues – no slipping, no containment problems, everything was nice and smooth with that secure feeling to top it all off.
Just as mentioned, I don’t know what the cushion is called on this one but it’s nothing special even if I would know the name. If you played in any other Curry shoe, this one is extremely similar. If not, then this your best version of a low profile cushion setup you can get.
It’s not concrete level firm. It’s pretty firm but still provides a mild amount of impact protection, really really good step transitions, smooth motions no matter the movement, plenty of court feel and a very stable & quick ride. And that’s all a low profile guard like Curry would ever need. If you want a shoe with bouncy BOOST-like cushion, skip this one.
I can’t really say bad things about the traction. They gripped the floor well, enough to make me forget about them while playing. I did wipe from time to time but it wasn’t interrupting.
They don’t look outdoor-friendly, especially that translucent outsole (the one I have). Might want to skip this one if you’re looking for an outdoor shoe. If you are, check THESE out instead.
Most of the shoe’s support comes from how it fits and feels. There are basic support features but I really didn’t feel a need for extra support from this shoe. I’m no way a low profile guard, I always look for strong support but these ones really nail it with their great fit and a secure feel, no matter what you do on the court.
These won’t obviously protect you from ankle rolls since the collar is just fabric but foot lockdown & containment are great.
SMOOTH KNIT & LIGHTWEIGHT SYNTHETIC
The Curry 4 looks like a futuristic shoe and has futuristic type materials. The inner part of the shoe is very soft and pleasant knit, while the rest of it is a sturdier synthetic with a microfiber finish. The combo is an amazing duo of lightweight support and just pure mobility.
The inner part is breathable, super light, comfy and allows people with high foot arches actual comfort. The outer synthetic part is definitely not “plasticy” or rock-hard. It has a bit more structure to make the shoe last and strategically support key areas.
BEST FOR LOW PROFILE GUARDS
If you just want a great option for your guard needs, take this one. Give ’em a little time. You will not be disappointed.
+ A FANTASTIC FIT AFTER THE BREAK-IN
+ TRACTION DIDN’T DISAPPOINT
+ LIGHTWEIGHT SUPPORT, STILL FEELS SECURE
– WOULDN’T LAST OUTDOORS
– A MINIMALISTIC CUSHION SETUP WHO WANT MORE
Okay, that’s it for the review! I hope you found it useful!
