The Milwaukee Bucks are known as one of the top teams within the NBA. It’s a team that has seen its fair share of success in recent years. They are known for playing attractive and exciting basketball. Over the years, they have seen many talented players come and go. This season, The Bucks are chasing their second NBA title in their history and it’s looking good for the Milwaukee side. With Giannis Antetokounmpo front and centre, it looks like anything is possible. But this is a franchise with a proud history worth visiting.
The clock is certainly ticking for the Bucks, it has been almost four decades since they won their last NBA title. Over this period, there have been some near misses. There’s no doubting that The Bucks have come close to titles and have been edged out.
Started in 1968, the team managed to be quite successful in it’s early years. In their first year, they reached the playoffs. They also got awarded the top pick when it came to the NBA draft. This helped them go on to build a formidable team that went on to reach the playoffs and win a record of 66 games. During this time, they also picked up their one and only NBA title in 1971 – the quickest won by any new franchise within the NBA. Over the 70s and 80s they dominated the Midwest and Central divisions.
After this period, the franchise went into a sort of decline. Over the late 80’s, 90, and 00s the team appeared to be just making up the numbers. With loads of forgettable game and the titles having dried up. Milwaukee seemed to have seen their best years behind them. They were able to make it to a few Conference Finals but struggled to assert themselves as they had done before. However, success continued to elude the team. They recorded one of their worst seasons on the 2012/2014 season – which was a new low for the team.
But green shoots began to show during the 2014-15 season when new head coach Jason Kidd started to put together a young talented team. Kidd managed to guide the team to the playoffs and add 26 more wins compared to the previous season. Also, Giannis Antetokounmpo quickly developed his game to suit the needs of the team – it was obvious that he was becoming the driving force behind the team.
It wasn’t until the arrival of Mike Budenholzer, that the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. Budenholzer’s focus was on defence and this is where he went to work. He developed one of the most compact and solid defence lines in the NBA. In the 2018-19 season, they ended up with the best defensive records in the league. He guided Milwaukee to the conference for the first time in 18 years only to be stopped by Toronto.
Milwaukee seems to be heading in the right direction and it seems that a team that is packed with so much talent has not collected an NBA title yet… However, all eyes are on them and it appears to be only a matter of time.
